Broadband Internet Connection

The advantages of using broadband include the ability to use the internet and the telephone at the same time and the increased speeds; up to 8 megabits per second download speed. Because the speed is so much faster, it is possible to connect more than one computer at a time to the internet using a small home network.

Even higher download speeds; up to 20Mb for downloads are now being advertised by suppliers such as BT and Virgin Media, however these speeds are only available to telephone customers who have fibre-optic delivery systems; most customers will still rely on a copper wire delivery method.

There are a number of ways to connect your computer to broadband internet access. The most usual method in the home employs an ADSL (Asynchronous Digital Subscriber Line) modem on a standard telephone line.
Older broadband modems connected to the computer by a USB lead whereas the more modern way is to use an Ethernet network connector.

Current thinking by numerous ISPs (Internet Service Providers) is to supply their customers with a router/modem. This is a unit which incorporates both the modem and a circuit to enable a number of computers to connect simultaneously.
Many router/modems also offer a wireless connection in addition to the wired connections allowing wireless enabled laptops to connect to the internet too.

The second method often used by laptop users is the wireless dongle. This allows users to connect to the internet over the 3G (third generation) mobile phone network. The main UK providers are Orange (Internet Everywhere), T-Mobile and 3 from Carphone Warehouse. Both contract and pay-as-you-go options are available.

A third option is the WiFi hotspot. Some are available in hotels, pubs and restaurants; sometimes free to customers but others require payment to access the key code.

BT Openzone and BTFON offer a “WiMax”, a higher power wide area wireless service in some areas where wireless access is available to laptop users who have an account already set up.

Whichever is your prefered method of accessing the internet, BW Data Designs can help you make the right connection.
