Within the home network environment sharing falls generally into two methods:
- Files, folders, drives and printers already connected to another computer on the network.
- Drives, printers and other computers connected directly to the network.
One advantage of using external drives connected by either method is that those precious files, pictures and music can be easily backed up and protected on a medium which is separate from the main computer, so if the hard disk drive in your main computer should fail you won't lose all your data and it can easily be replaced.
Modern external hard disk drives have capacities of anything between 40 Gigabytes to well in excess of a Terabyte (1000 Gigabytes) and can be easily connected to a computer using a USB port and some can be connected directly to your home network.
The latest trend in printers and “All-in-one” units is to provide various connection methods including USB ports, ethernet connection to the router/modem and wireless connection to a wireless enabled router/modem, either one of which can be used.
BW Data Designs can advise you on the best option for your situation and we will even connect and set up the computers and peripheral units.
